  New supreme court updates on 27 April, 2023 Appointment of 11 judicial officers and 2 advocates as Additional High Court Judges, Centre recommends transfer of two High Court judges 27 April, 2023 Today, the Central Government notified the appointment of 11 Judicial Officers and 2 Advocates as Judges in the High Courts. Also, the transfer of two High Court Judges was also notified. The announcement was also shared on Twitter by Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the resident of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint the following as Judges in the High Courts and also transfer High Court Judges.” The names recommended for fresh appointment of High Court judges were: Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal (Judicial Officer) Girish Kathpalia (Judicial Officer) Manoj Jain (Judicial Officer) Roopesh Chandra Varshney (Judicial Officer) Smt. Special Marriage Act, 1954

  Special Marriage Act, 1954 28 April, 2023 Introduction The Indian Constitution allows a special type of marriage for the people of India where they can marry irrespective of their religion or caste which is defined under the Constitution of India as the Special Marriage Act of 1954 . The SMA was enacted by the Parliament into the Indian legal system in 1954. This law controls those marriages which are not intended to be solemnized due to religious traditions. SMA is known as the Special Marriage Act because it provides a unique marriage for those who are not interested in following traditional religious customs. In this type of marriage, there is no requirement of converting or rejecting one’s religion, unlike arranged marriages where two families should belong to the same community or caste. The Act provides, “a special form of marriage in certain cases, for the registration of such and certain other marriages and for divorce.” SMA is applicable to all Indian citizens of all faiths

  Same-sex marriage recognition: “Don’t cite Dobbs, we are far beyond it,” Supreme Court on citing US SC’s order regarding Abortion rights 26 April, 2023 Today, the Constitution bench was hearing the same-sex marriage recognition case for the fifth day where at least a bunch of 15 petitions were addressed seeking marriage equality in India. During the argument today, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta cited the US Supreme Court’s controversial decision in Dobbs v. X where it was determined that there is no constitutional right to abortion. In context to this, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said “Don’t cite Dobbs, we are far beyond it and fortunately so,” CJI further continued, “if you are relying on Dobbs to support that principle then we have gone far beyond Dobbs in India…  Read full update here  Also Read: Legal News
